TAX COURT OF CANADA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS
ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, June 19, 2003 -- The Honourable Martin Cauchon,
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following
appointments:
Paul Bédard of Montréal is appointed a judge
of the Tax Court of Canada. He replaces Judge G. Teskey who elected to become
a supernumerary judge.
Judge Bédard graduated in law in 1971, obtained a Master of
Laws (tax law) from the University of Sherbrooke in 1974, and was admitted to
the Bar of Quebec in 1973.
Prior to his appointment, Judge Bédard was a partner with
the firm Gowling Lafleur Henderson, where he practised mainly in the areas of
tax and corporate law.
Judge Bédard is a former member of l'Association de la planification fiscale
et financière, as well as the Canadian Tax Foundation. He is the author
of several articles, as well as a frequent speaker in his area of expertise.
Georgette Anne Sheridan of
Ottawa is appointed a judge of the Tax Court of Canada. She replaces Judge R.D. Bell
who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Judge Sheridan obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the University
of Saskatchewan in 1982, and was called to the Law Society of Saskatchewan in
1983.
At the time of her appointment, she was a Special Advisor with the National
Judicial Institute, coordinating the involvement of the Canadian judiciary in
international development projects. She is a former Judicial Affairs Advisor,
and a former Member of Parliament for the riding of Saskatoon-Humboldt. She
has practised law with the Saskatoon firm of Gauley & Company (now known
as McDougall, Gauley), and is a former consultant with the Law Reform Commission
of Saskatchewan.
Judge Sheridan is a member of the Canadian Bar Association,
and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Parliamentary Centre.
These appointments are effective immediately.
