QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, July 24, 2003 -- The Honourable Martin Cauchon,
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following
appointments:
Claude C. Gagnon of Québec City is appointed a judge of the Superior
Court of Justice. He will be assigned to the district of Québec and he replaces
Mr. Justice J. Blanchard who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Gagnon graduated in law from l'Université Laval in 1972, and was
admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1974. At the time of his appointment,
he was a partner with the Québec firm of Fontaine, Gagnon, Dugal & Associés
where he practised in criminal and disciplinary law. In the past, he also practised
law with the Crown Counsel office.
Mr. Justice Gagnon has been a Professor of criminal law at l'Université Laval
as well as an Instructor of criminal law at the Bar Admission Course. He is
a Founding member and Vice-President of the Association des criminalistes
en défense de Québec and a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
Claudette Tessier-Couture of Québec is appointed
a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Québec. She will be assigned to
the district of Québec and she replaces Mr. Justice R. Goodwin who elected to
become a supernumerary judge.
Madam Justice Tessier-Couture graduated in law from l'Université
Laval in 1984, and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1986. At
the time of her appointment, she was with the firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin
s.r.l. in Québec City where she practised mainly in real-estate law.
Madam Justice Tessier-Couture is a member of the Canadian Bar Association. She
has also served as an administrator of the Fonds d'aide au recours collectif.
These appointments are effective immediately.
