ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, October 30, 2003 - The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister
of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
Charles T. Hackland of Ottawa is appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior
Court of Justice. He will be assigned to Ottawa by the Chief Justice, and will
replace Mr. Justice J. B. Chadwick who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Hackland received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ottawa
in 1975, and a B.C.L. from Oxford University in 1977. He was admitted to the
Law Society of Upper Canada in 1978.
Prior to his appointment, he was a partner with the Ottawa firm of Gowling
Lafleur Henderson LLP and practised primarily in civil litigation and administrative
law. He has appeared before all levels of the courts, including the Supreme
Court of Canada.
Throughout his career, Mr. Justice Hackland was an active member of the Advocates
Society, and the County of Carleton Law Association. He was also a member of
the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists and a member
of the Council of the Ontario Bar Association. As well, he has been an Instructor
at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa, at Carleton University, and
at the Bar Admission Course.
This appointment is effective immediately.
