QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTEMENTS ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, November 6, 2003 -- The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of Justice
and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
Michel Déziel of Blainville is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior
Court - district of Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice P. Jolin who elected to
become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Déziel obtained a Bachelor of Laws from l'Université
de Sherbrooke in 1971, and was admitted to the Barreau
du Québec in 1972.
At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with Dunton Rainville s.e.n.c.
and practiced mostly in municipal law, as well as in real estate law, banking
law, and civil and criminal litigation. In the past, he was also a partner with
Déziel, Paquin, Longval.
Mr. Justice Déziel is a membre gouverneur de la
Fondation du Barreau du Québec, as well as a member of the
Canadian Bar Association.
André Roy of Trois-Rivières is appointed a judge of the Quebec
Superior Court - district of Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice C. Larouche who
elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Roy obtained a Bachelor of Laws from l'Université de Sherbrooke
in 1971, and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1972.
Since 1992, he was a partner with Heenan Blaikie s.r.l. and was responsible
for the Trois-Rivières office. He practiced mostly in labour law, employment
law and administrative law.
Mr. Justice Roy is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, of l'Ordre des
conseillers en ressources humaines et en relations industrielles agréés
du Québec, and a member of the Family Law Committee of the Barreau du
Québec. He has been an instructor of law at l'Université du Québec
à Trois-Rivières, and has also acted as a panellist.
Jean-Yves J.A. Lalonde of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court
of Quebec - district of Montreal. He replaces Mr. Justice A.R. Hilton who was
appointed to the Court of Appeal.
Mr. Justice Lalonde received a Bachelor of Laws from l'Université de
Montréal in 1976, and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in
1978.
Since 1993, he was a partner with Kaufman Laramée s.e.n.c., in Montreal
where he was responsible for the litigation section. He also practiced in the
areas of bankruptcy law, banking law, as well as commercial litigation and municipal
law. In the past, he has also practiced law with the firms of Guy et Gilbert
and L'Heureux Nadeau.
Mr. Justice Lalonde is a resource lawyer with the Association du jeune Barreau
de Montréal, as well as a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
These appointments are effective immediately.
