NOVA SCOTIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS

OTTAWA, November 6, 2003 -- The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

Gregory M. Warner, Q.C., of Yarmouth is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. He will be assigned to Kentville by the Chief Justice and replaces Mr. Justice C. E. Haliburton who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Warner received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University Law School in 1972, and was admitted to Nova Scotia Barristers' Society in 1972. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1988.

At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with Warner, Jacquard. Previously, he was managing partner with Pink Macdonald Harding. He has also been solicitor for the Town of Yarmouth since 1979.

Mr. Justice Warner is a past council member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society and a member of the Nova Scotia branch of the Canadian Bar Association.

Kevin Coady, Q.C., of Halifax is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. He will be assigned to Halifax by the Chief Justice and replaces Mr. Justice J.M. Davison who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Coady received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University Law School in 1981, and was admitted to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society in 1981. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 2002.

At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with Coady Filliter, where he practised mostly in criminal law.

Mr. Justice Coady is First Vice-President of the Executive Committee of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, has been Chair of its Administration of Justice Committee, Chair of its Task Force on Professional Civility, Chair of its Supreme Court Liaison Sub-committee, as well as a member of other committees. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission, an instructor at Dalhousie Law School, as well as a Facilitator of its criminal clinic. He was also a contributor to the Continuing Legal Education Society.

These appointments are effective immediately.
