Outstanding Achievers | 2003 Archives

NRC-IIT staff's commitment to research excellence is routinely rewarded by widespread peer recognition. In addition, a number of NRC-IIT staff are saluted by the Institute and the Council for their outstanding achievement every year. In 2003, a record number of IIT outstanding achievers were honoured.

 Award recipient Gilbert Babin

Gilbert Babin

General Award, for surpassing the expectations associated with his position by coordinating programming responsibilities, working with and training other programming staff and students, and coordinating many group productivity activities such as staff meetings and planning processes. Gilbert has become an essential part of the e-Learning group in a number of capacities, playing a key role in numerous projects (eduSource and Workflow) and a leadership role both within the group and internationally.

CS Team (Atlantic) – Christian Charette, Justin Hickey, Danny D'Amours, Roger Martin, Brad Matthews, Luc Belliveau, René Richard, Ken Tessier

General Award, for their outstanding contribution to the procurement, installation and configuration of NRC-IIT Atlantic network and servers infrastructure within serious time constraints. Their contribution went well above and beyond their normal position requirements. The successful completion of these projects must be attributed to the dedication, experience and commitment to see the job done. They dedicated many additional hours on evenings and weekends to ensure that the tasks assigned were carried out to the highest standards.

Anita Mainville, Anne DeGrandpré and Debbie Mayville

General Award, in recognition of their achievements at an exceptionally high level over an extended period of time. During the prolonged absence of an Administrative Manager and Administrative Coordinator in the NCR, they went beyond their duties to ensure that the required work was done for the Institute in Ottawa so that that their respective groups were able to continue with their day to day activities. They also provided training of new Administrative Assistants in Atlantic and Gatineau by mentoring and by providing a procedures manual from which the new Administrative Assistants would be able to follow NRC-IIT procedures in a clear and easy-to-use fashion.

Rodrigue Savoie

General Award, for his pivotal role in R&D and management in the short history of NRC-IIT Atlantic. His personal contributions and involvement related to so many aspects of NRC-IIT’s success are of significant merit to the Council and the Institute.


  Award recipient Ken Emig

Ken Emig

Projects Support Role Award, for his support and innovation beyond expectations in the Mutual Media Research Laboratory. Ken has become a keystone in the successful operation of the MMRL, and in the running of the ACE AccessGrid nodes in Moncton and Ottawa.


  Award recipient Ronggong Song

Ronggong Song

General Award for, his extraordinary contributions to the PISA project and laying the technical foundation in information security for the Network Computing Group and NRC-IIT. The European Union's review panel of respected international scientists considered Ronggong's work to be “exemplary of contributions to a framework project”. Ronggong has also been very active in producing scientific and technical results.

Philippe Massicotte

Projects Support Role Award for exceptional and indispensable support for the smooth running of the Visual Information Technology Group’s research activities. Philippe has become an essential part of the 3D immersive telecollaboration project and all the related projects.


  Award recipient François Blais

François Blais

Outstanding Research Achievement Award for the development of an integrated approach to real-time 3D measurement and modelling that is contributing a radically new solution to one of the most difficult 3D vision problems. This work and the results are opening up a new direction in research, with numerous opportunities for innovation and applications in the fields of cultural heritage and space operations (NASA).
