Interactive Information
Formed in 1995, the Interactive Information Group (II) is one of the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) 14 research groups and is located in Ottawa, Ontario.
The II group focuses on the research, development and application of techniques to enhance access to information. As ever-increasing electronic stores of information become available, so too should intelligent software that is able to find what users need to know.
The II group approaches the problem of information access in three general ways:
- The computer works alone, using heuristics and statistics to extract useful information.
- Users guide the computational search interactively to result in better answers than either computer or human could find alone.
- User collaboration is promoted. In this case, the computer(s) primarily mediates the communication between (potentially remote) users.
The group's research projects combine these approaches to make progress in the scientific study of:
- machine learning
- human computer interfaces
- natural language processing
- collaborative computing
