High Performance Computing

GridCanada

The NRC-IIT is collaborating with CANARIE Inc., C3.ca and Canadian universities in GridCanada, an informal organization established in the fall of 2001 to foster and coordinate grid computing in Canada. GridCanada is an ongoing project.

Through GridCanada, researchers seek to:

  • assist resource owners across Canada participate in a national Grid by helping them enable their computers, storage, network, instruments and visualization devices
  • make the national Grid available to Canadian public sector researchers
  • help Canadian research communities deploy applications that can use the national Grid

Ultimately, GridCanada partners aim to Grid-enable the nation!

Initially, GridCanada partners expect their research will facilitate and support grand-scale applications in computational science. However, although all areas of science can involve such applications with non-trivial amounts of computation, storage and networking, GridCanada is currently focusing on high-energy physics and the biological sciences.

Future research could extend to computational economics, with applications in data mining and economic modelling.

Inquiries about collaborating in this research are most welcome.

GridCanada continually seeks to deploy innovative and challenging applications and infrastructure. As such, any public Canadian research organization with a grand-scale application or resources to commit in part is welcome to contact the research contact listed below.

GridCanada is interested in any application that can take advantage of resources spread across distinct management domains, with open protocols and interfaces, and that will display high aggregate performance of many different aspects of the system.

These applications may be, but are not restricted to, such data-intensive areas as high-energy physics and biological sciences or compute-intensive areas such as modelling. GridCanada welcomes additions to this list and urges interested organizations to contact the research contact.

In addition, any Canadian organization willing to conduct fundamental research and development into Grid middleware is also welcome to contact the project lead. GridCanada is particularly interested in feedback into the development of existing Grid middleware and the formation of new standards.

Finally, GridCanada is extremely interested in helping industry understand, develop and use the Grid. Please contact the research contact listed below to discuss such opportunities.
