Navigation in Virtual Environments

The Navigation in Virtual Environments project began in 1996 and is ongoing. Its aim is to develop interface techniques and tools to support navigation and problem solving in large-scale 3D environments, whether virtual, real or augmented. The project is being conducted in partnership with Defense Research and Development Canada, (DRDC), Toronto (formerly Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine).

Researchers expect that positive results could have a beneficial impact on:

  • intelligent transportation systems
  • visualization; e.g., information retrieval; network management; scientific, software and medical visualization applications; military command and control
  • telerobotics
  • virtual reality
