Border Enforcement Teams (IBETS)
The RCMP’s key objectives in the fight
against terrorism are:
- Reduce the threat of terrorist activity in Canada
and abroad
- Successfully detect, prevent/disrupt, and investigate
terrorist activity
- Expand information collection and sharing of information
and intelligence
- Produce robust intelligence
- Ensure border integrity
Contingency Plan and Preparedness
- The RCMP develops and maintains public safety and
security emergency plans in collaboration with various departments and
agencies involved in public safety and security matters.
- These plans include the activation of its National
Operations Centre, in certain circumstances and the mobilization of
appropriate operational and analytical experts to respond, around the
clock, to all issues impacting on the security of Canada.
- The RCMP will be working very closely with all its
municipal and provincial police partners, federal government partners,
and international partners in response to any threat information which
may surface.
- The RCMP is committed to gathering criminal intelligence,
preventing and responding to terrorist action, and integrating its investigative,
technical and scientific resources with partners such as Health Canada,
Environment Canada, Canadian Security Intelligence Service, the Department
of National Defense and the U.S. Department of National Defense.
Border Integrity
- To ensure border integrity, the RCMP works closely
with domestic, U.S. and international government and law enforcement
partners to prevent, deter and detect criminal and terrorist activities
that may pose a threat to national, U.S. or global security.
- The establishment of Integrated Border Enforcement
Teams (IBETs) deployed along or near the Canada /U.S. border enables
us to better identify and investigate persons, organizations or incidents
of national security concern. IBETs comprise representatives of the
RCMP, CCRA, provincial police agencies and U.S. counterparts.
Protective Policing Mandate
- Under its protective policing mandate, the RCMP is
responsible for safeguarding Canadian and foreign dignitaries, their
official residences as well as foreign missions in Canada.
- In the aftermath of September 11, the RCMP increased
its security measures on Parliament Hill. Threat assessment levels for
Parliament Hill as well as foreign missions in Canada are monitored
on an on-going basis and protective measures are adjusted accordingly.
On Terrorism
- The RCMP is an active partner in the worldwide fight
against terrorism and continues its efforts in partnership with other
law enforcement and police agencies in Canada and abroad.
- The RCMP, in partnership with other law enforcement
agencies, government departments and agencies and international partners,
constantly assesses any potential terrorist threats that may impact
the safety and security of Canadians.
- The RCMP continues to integrate its efforts with
the law enforcement community by exchanging strategic and criminal intelligence,
by sharing tactical and operational knowledge and resources, by planning
joint and individual actions, and by communicating effectively.
