Minister Day congratulates RCMP on receiving international award for tackling crime in Quebec aboriginal communities

October 19, 2006 Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day released the following statement in response to news that an integrated police team, led by the RCMP, was awarded the Motorola Webber Seavey Award for Quality in Law Enforcement at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Boston.

The award recognizes innovative policing programs that serve as models for law enforcement agencies around the world. The unit was recognized for its efficient and effective involvement in three major international operations that led to the arrest of more than 100 individuals:

“This award points directly to the effective partnership and hard work of our law enforcement community - across a number of jurisdictions - in fighting crime and keeping communities safe. I would like to commend all members of Aboriginal Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (A-CFSEU).

I am very pleased to see that in working together, the RCMP, Sûreté du Québec and the Association of First Nations Chiefs of Police, have been recognized by the international policing community for their law enforcement excellence and dedication to the safety of communities in which they live and serve. Canada’s new government is committed to tackling crime and supporting our law enforcement agencies and officers in order to keep our communities secure and our streets safe.”
