CHAIRPERSON'S STATEMENT
In the last few weeks, the Immigration and Refugee Board has been the
focus of media attention. On March 18, the RCMP
laid criminal charges against a former IRB
Immigration Appeal Division member. The IRB
will not comment or speculate on any possible outcome, as the criminal
justice system must run its course.
The charges, while very serious, should not overshadow the excellent
work of the IRB
and the dedication and professionalism of its personnel.
It is my duty and a priority of the IRB
to ensure that measures are in place to protect the public interest and
the integrity of our processes. However, in a democratic society, there
is not a single institution or organisation that can fully protect itself
against allegations of inappropriate behaviour or criminal activities.
Our shared focus at the IRB
is to continue to fulfill our mission in a professional and committed
manner. There are currently more than 200 decision-makers at the IRB.
Hundreds more have worked as members at the Board since it was created
15 years ago. The Board has dealt with around half a million cases since
1989.
Over the years, employees and decision-makers of the IRB
have demonstrated their unfailing commitment to the principle that every
individual deserves to be treated fairly, efficiently and in accordance
with the law and we will continue to do so.
I firmly believe in the integrity of our institution and I maintain the
pride I have in being the Chairperson of the IRB.
