Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC): Safety Training for Firearms Owners

Individuals applying for a Possession and Acquisition Licence must first pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course tests. The course and tests are administered by an instructor designated by the Chief Firearms Officer in the province where the applicant resides.

Those who wish to acquire a firearm, and who have already passed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course tests, or have completed before January 1, 1995 any course or test approved by the provincial Attorney General, will not have to take another course.

Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC): for handguns and other restricted or prohibited firearms.

To become eligible for a licence to acquire restricted firearms, an individual will have to pass the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course tests. Persons who have already passed the CFSC tests between 1993 and February 1999 will be considered to have met this standard.

The new CRFSC reflects the additional safety concerns and legal obligations relating specifically to restricted and prohibited firearms.

Exceptions

In the instances specified below, certain persons may be exempted from taking the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and/or the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course:

  1. a person who has been certified by a Chief Firearms Officer as meeting the prescribed criteria relating to the safe handling and use of firearms and laws relating to firearms;

  2. a person who is less than 18 years-old and requires a firearm to hunt or trap for sustenance;

  3. a non-resident of Canada who is at least 18 years-old and who requires a 60-day temporary licence to possess non-restricted firearms.
