About Us

Established in 1990, the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) is one of the National Research Council's 20 research institutes and national programs.

NRC-IIT is dedicated to R&D in software and systems technologies. The Institute is a key player in R&D collaborations and partnerships in information and telecommunications technologies with business, universities and government agencies, in Canada and around the world.

NRC-IIT conducts scientific research, develops technology, creates knowledge and supports innovation with the aim of having a beneficial and profound impact on Canadian society. NRC-IIT blends the long-term vision inherent in leading-edge science with a capacity to adapt to emerging S&T issues and priorities.

The Institute strives to be as innovative in its business practices as it is in the research it conducts. NRC-IIT's innovative solutions include licensable technologies, R&D support and business mentoring, and flexible working partnerships.

In June 2000, NRC received Federal Government funding —under the Atlantic Investment Partnership (AIP) —to expand its facilities in Atlantic Canada in order to nurture the development of community-based technology clusters. Following extensive public consultation with local stakeholders, NRC established a new e-business research program in New Brunswick, tied to the Institute for Information Technology. Additional funding from the Province of New Brunswick and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) allowed the further expansion of the research program to several communities.

As a result, NRC-IIT became a multi-site organization, with facilities in Ottawa, ON; Fredericton, and Moncton, NB. NRC-IIT has also grown to include a facility in Gatineau, QC with the establishment of the Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC), a joint initiative in support of Canada’s Action Plan on Official Languages.

NRC-IIT believes it can achieve the greatest impact by maintaining its record of excellence in collaborating with industrial and other partners and in fostering local cluster development.
