The Virtual Boutique is a complete virtual environment solution for e-business. This virtual environment (VE), which is based on Java 3D and on a distributed objects architecture, is fully scalable and can run as a normal display, in stereo mode or as a tiled wall display.

The VE builder seamlessly integrates computer-generated and virtualized objects. The latter can be virtualized with laser scanners, time of flight systems, stereo cameras or photogrammetric techniques like ShapeCapture™, a licensed product developed by IIT-VIT.

The Virtual Boutique also integrated our patented content-based search engine Alexandria, which retrieves items of interest based on three-dimensional shape and colour: an intuitive and non-language dependent paradigm.

The Virtual Boutique began in January 2000, and is part of IIT-VIT’s ongoing research to provide scientific technologies and techniques to collaborative partners in other disciplines by employing its expertise in visual sensing and processing. In collaboration with such partners as University of Pretoria (South Africa) and SITE (University of Ottawa), IIT-VIT has been able to develop useful technology to solve problems in virtual environments for e-business and e-commerce applications.
