Visual communications are pervasive in information technology and are a key enabler of most new emerging media. In this context, the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) performs research, development and technology transfer activities to enable access to 3D information of the real world.

Research in the 3D Technologies program focuses on three main areas:
