Victims of Crime Initiative: Activities Report April 2000 - October 2004

4. Conclusion and Future Activities

Over the course of its current five-year mandate, the PCVI has engaged in a broad range of activities in order to meet its objectives. This report has illustrated many of these activities and the ways in which the PCVI has sought to improve and enhance its work by reflecting on priorities, “fine-tuning” work plans, and informally and formally evaluating outputs.

The evaluation of the VCI indicates that the initiative has been successful on a number of levels. The PCVI has fostered and nurtured partnerships both internally and externally. Through these partnerships and in particular, the support of the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Working Group on Victims of Crime, the PCVI has facilitated a coordinated approach to victim issues across Canada. Research, case law reviews and consultations have provided the PCVI with information and knowledge on issues of concern and possible next steps. The Victims Fund has assisted the PCVI by ensuring that we are informed and remain current to victim issues and concerns in the jurisdictions.  It has also allowed the PCVI to test innovative approaches, identify lessons learned regarding effective programming, and helped to fill in gaps in services for victims across the country. Finally, funding for Crown Witness Coordinators in the northern territories has been a key activity of the initiative.

While much has been accomplished, the need for information, legislation, and other support to victims of crime, criminal justice professionals and others that are impacted by crime is ongoing. Consequently, there is still much work to do and the PCVI is dedicated to this work. The accomplishments and lessons learned by the PCVI from August 2000 to October 2004 will assist us in our pursuit of further funding and provide a strong foundation for us to build on.
