128-bit "strong" encryption

To apply to register your firearms over the Internet you require a browser that supports SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) with 128-bit 'strong' encryption. Strong encryption enables you to make secure transactions.

If your current browser does not support 128-bit SSL or JavaScript, you can download a patch or a more recent version of the browser.

Internet Explorer® users:
Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed. If you see 'Cipher Strength: 128 bits' or similar terminology referring to 128-bit encryption, your browser can support SSL.

If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, and TLS 1.0.

Netscape NavigatorTusers:
In Navigator or Communicator, select the Help menu, then choose About Navigator (or Communicator). Look for the section that reads "Contains encryption software from RSA Data Security, Inc". If the next paragraph says "This version supports U.S. security..." that means you have 128-bit security and can use SSL. If it says you have International security, that means you have 40-bit security.

If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click on the padlock symbol to open the Security window. Select Navigator then set options to enable SSL v2 and SSL v3.

Both Netscape and Microsoft offer free downloadable versions of their browsers that support 128-bit encryption.

If you use another type of browser software:
Please check with your software supplier to ensure that your browser has an RC4 CYPHER 128-bit secure sockets layer encryption capability.

Note
The Canada Firearms Centre is not responsible for any difficulties or problems in downloading and installing software. Technical support is provided by the software suppliers.
