The Honourable Jim Rondeau, Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mines, and Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James – Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Carol Skelton, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of Western Economic Diversification, signed a proclamation designating October 15 to 21 as Small Business Week in honour of the achievements of small- and medium-sized businesses.
“Manitoba means business and small business is a big priority; it is truly the backbone of our economy,” said Rondeau. “To support small businesses, we have expanded our Business Start Program and increased the small business loan guarantee program. We’re continuing to streamline processes to make it even easier to do business in Manitoba.”
“Canada’s New Government recognizes that small business is key
to shaping our economy and our way of life,” said Fletcher. “This
government is working to cut taxes and decrease the burden on business so that
small business can thrive”.
Small Business Week was launched from Tell Us About Us Inc., a Manitoba small
business success story. Started in 1998, it has become an industry-leading technology
company that is focused on developing cutting edge market research software.
“The Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre has been a substantial resource
to us as a Manitoba company, which has grown from two people to 50 people in
eight years", said Tyler Gompf, President of Tell Us About Us Inc.
“A World Without Boundaries, Open to New Markets” is the theme
of this year’s event. Small businesses are being encouraged to learn how
to tap into the world’s developing economies and emerging middle class
markets.
“We invite new and existing businesses to contact the Centre to see how
we can help them to start and grow their business,” said Shannon Coughlin,
General Manager of the Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre. “From
business planning and exporting, to financial management and e-commerce, the
Centre houses a comprehensive collection of information for every stage of business
development.”
Small Business Week is a national initiative led by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), in cooperation with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, with the support of national and local sponsors, and pays tribute to the accomplishments of the owners and managers of small- and medium-sized enterprises.
“The world’s developing economies are growing at a rapid pace and giving rise to huge emerging markets”, said Kris Smith, Vice President and Area Manager Manitoba and Saskatchewan, BDC. “To survive and thrive, Canadian entrepreneurs need to be part of this movement by taking advantage of the tremendous opportunities that are arising in a world without boundaries. The BDC can assist companies realize on these dreams, by providing innovative financing and consulting services and by supporting entrepreneurs with activities such as Small Business Week. “
