Alberta Women Entrepreneurs

PDF Version (101K) PDF

Women play a vital role by creating and operating small businesses across Canada.  But they often face many barriers and challenges. To break down these barriers, Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) established the Women's Enterprise Initiative (WEI) to provide business information and services to women entrepreneurs in the four western provinces.

In Alberta, the organization is known as Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (AWE). It opened its doors in 1995 and supports women entrepreneurs across Alberta. The aim is to provide Alberta women with services to build their business strengths and strengthen their contribution to Alberta’s economy.

One of the WEI’s unique features is the business loan fund. The fund offers loans up to $100,000 to help women start or grow their business.

AWE provides women entrepreneurs with services in:

  • financing
  • integrated business advising
  • one-on-one confidential business coaching
  • support, training and networking

Services are provided by telephone, fax, computer and business advisors throughout the province.
