Gold Medal Policing

Research Study Launch

The Canadian Police Research Centre (CPRC) is proud to have collaborated on a groundbreaking study now released.

Gold Medal Policing: Mental Readiness and Performance Excellence examines the reasons why exceptional police officers perform well under challenging situations.

The three year study, led by the University of Ottawas Judy McDonald, shows how high-performing individuals:
achieve consistency in their actions;
are ready on demand;
manage distractions;
remain focused;
and develop effective coping strategies.

Her analysis is based on in-depth interviews of front-line police officers and comparisons with similar studies of other high performance professionals, such as medical surgeons and world-class athletes.

The research was made possible through the partnership and commitment of the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa Police Service and the City of Ottawa and through substantive project contributors such as the Canadian Police Research Centre, the National Research Councils (NRCs) Industrial Research Assistance Program and University of Ottawa's, Institute of Population Health.

It demonstrates the value of frank dialogue with front-line officers in understanding equipment needs and performance. This perspective provides insight for advancing future design and delivery of protective policing equipment.

Steve Palmer, Executive Director, Canadian Police Research Centre
