Capabilities

Capabilities - Space Optronics

6-stage advanced thermoelectric cooler unitTo advise and support the Canadian Forces on science and technology related to electro-optical sensing from ground and space-based systems, the Establishment develops concepts, components, modern technologies and data exploitation capabilities for the surveillance of/from space and space-based early warning and ballistic defence aspects. The emphasis is on three main research and development areas: advanced passive and active sensing systems required for spectral, spatial and temporal assessments of targets and backgrounds; data exploitation algorithms and tools for processing and fuzing electro-optical/SAR sensor data into information for aided or automatic target detection and identification; and micro-systems using MEMS (micro-electro mechanical systems) and MEOMS (micro-electro-optical-mechanical systems) technologies encountered in space-based sensing systems.
Expertise - Space Optronics

Spectral Imaging

Active and passive multi/hyperspectral imaging sensors; target and background spectral characterization, chemical and plume detection, intelligence collection, satellite sensor concept development and system requirement analysis; modelling and evaluation of space- based electro-optical sensing systems.

Space-Based Electro-Optical Data Exploitation

Hyperspectral phenomenology, image processing and fusion of electro-optical/SAR surveillance imagery for automatic target detection and identification of low-visibility targets or targets under camouflage, space object identification and tracking and surveillance of space sensor systems.

Micro-Systems

Design and manufacture novel micro sensors and ASIM (Application Specific Integrated Micro Instruments); make use of MEMS technology to enhance the reliability, capability, and reduce the cost, mass, and power consumption of optronic systems; perform research in the design, fabrication, and characterization of Silicon-based micro- satellites.
