VANCOUVER, B.C. – Simon Fraser University’s Sustainable Building Centre celebrated their official opening today with $200,000 in support from Western Economic Diversification Canada. The Centre will promote efficient and environmentally sound building practices throughout British Columbia. The Centre also opened the new exhibition, “Closing the Loop”, which runs from
July 26 to September 30 2006.
“Rising costs of energy make it vital that we start using innovative building solutions that are energy efficient and safe for the environment,” said James Moore, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services and to the Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, on behalf of the Honourable Carol Skelton, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of Western Economic Diversification. “Canada’s new government is committed to developing a strong sustainable building sector which will raise public awareness of the economic and environmental benefits of green building technology.”
"The CSCD will develop a regional economic development strategy and create an on-line resource centre for industry and potential consumers. The new Sustainable Building Centre will become a regional 'hub' that will support the development of the sustainable buildings market in British Columbia through new technologies, products and services," said Mark Roseland, Director of the CSCD.
"Located in the heart of Granville Island, the Sustainable Building Centre is Vancouver's one-stop-shop for sustainable building information for the industry and the public," said Helen Goodland, Executive Director of the Sustainable Building Centre. “Staffed by building industry professionals, the Centre provides practical how-to advice on sustainable building and creates a meaningful link to BC's green building product suppliers and service providers."
