The Honourable Rona Ambrose

Minister of the Environment

Edmonton–Spruce Grove (Alberta)

Rona Ambrose was elected to Parliament as the Member for Edmonton-Spruce Grove in 2004 and re-elected for a second term in 2006. She was subsequently appointed as Minister of the Environment on February 6, 2006 and looks forward to serving her constituency through the 39th session of Parliament in this role.  Prior to the election, she served as Critic for Intergovernmental Affairs and briefly as Critic for International Trade.

In addition to serving her constituents on a daily basis and fulfilling her critic roles, during the 38th Parliament, Ms. Ambrose held a wide range of parliamentary responsibilities.  She was a member of a number of parliamentary committees and related subcommittees, including the standing committees on Finance and on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance, and the Legislative Committee on Bill C-38.

As a speaker of many languages, including French, Ms. Ambrose has also worked extensively in Quebec to promote the Conservative Party message for Canadian unity.

Prior to her election, Ms. Ambrose held the post of Senior Intergovernmental Affairs Officer with the International and Intergovernmental Affairs Department of the Government of Alberta. This position permitted her to focus on fiscal, social and constitutional policy issues such as Senate reform and the 2003 Canada Health Accord. She is a former columnist and has also owned her own communications consulting firm.  Ms. Ambrose also has a long history of volunteering in the Edmonton area, particularly for the Edmonton Women’s Shelter.

Ms. Ambrose was born in 1969 in Valleyview, Alberta and has spent most of her life in Edmonton. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Victoria and a Master of Arts from the University of Alberta.  Her Masters thesis focused on the impact of emerging policy issues on Canadian poltics and included research on privacy legislation, electronic government and information-delivery options available to governments in Canada.  Ms. Ambrose lives in Edmonton with her husband Bruce.
