Sir Mackenzie Bowell (Conservative Party of Canada) was sworn in as Prime Minister of Canada on December 12, 1894, and served until April 27, 1896. Education rights for minorities were one of the most important issues of Mr.Bowell’s term. In addition to being Prime Minister, Mackenzie Bowell was Leader of the Government in the Senate from 1893 to 1896 and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate from 1896 to 1906. Mr. Bowell first sat as a Member of Parliament in 1867. He was born on December 27, 1823, in Rickinghall, Suffolk (England); before entering political life he worked as a printer and editor. He died on December 10, 1917, in Belleville, Ontario.
