Sir Charles Tupper (Conservative Party of Canada) held the office of Prime Minister of Canada from May 1 to July 8, 1896, making him the shortest serving Prime Minister in Canadian history. Before becoming Prime Minister, Charles Tupper was Premier of Nova Scotia from 1864 to 1867 and was a Father of Confederation in 1867. He was also Canada’s Minister of Finance from 1887 to 1888. He first sat as a member of the House of Commons in 1867. Before public life Mr. Tupper was a physician. After his short time in office, he was Leader of the Opposition from 1896 to 1901. Mr. Tupper was born on July 2, 1821, in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and died on October 30, 1915, in Bexley Heath (England). He is buried in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
