Charles Joseph Clark (Progressive Conservative Party of Canada) was sworn in as Prime Minister of Canada on June 4, 1979, the day before his 40th birthday, making him the youngest Prime Minister in Canadian history. Mr. Clark also appointed the first black cabinet minister in Canadian history. His term at the head of a minority government ended on March 2, 1980. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons from 1976 to 1979 and 1980 to 1983. Mr. Clark was first elected to Parliament in 1972;  before entering political life, he worked as a journalist. Joe Clark was born on June 5, 1939, in High River, Alberta.
