Fort McMurray Updates

The Fort McMurray People and Animal Reunion Centre in Edmonton will close to the public at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 19.

The centre remains open for animal pick-up from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Owners who have been contacted by the Alberta SPCA are strongly encouraged to pick up their animals before the centre closes on Thursday.

Unclaimed animals will be moved to other facilities better suited to meet their needs on an ongoing basis. The Alberta SPCA will continue its efforts to reunite these animals with their owners.

If you had to leave behind an animal during evacuation, please make sure you filled out the online form set up by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo so we know how to contact you.

The Alberta SPCA is still receiving transfers of animals from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. We are processing the arrivals as quickly as possible and then contacting owners with instructions about retrieval. Please be patient.

Peace officers from the Alberta SPCA and the Calgary Humane Society have been working tirelessly in Fort McMurray to help the Wood Buffalo Animal Control Services with the rescue of all the pets that remain there.

The extraction teams, each led by an experienced animal protection peace officer, have been moving from house to house. They have fed, watered, assessed and removed hundreds of animals to the staging area. The peace officers and their teams have training and experience in dealing with animal rescues and are equipped to handle emergency situations.

Phase 2 of the animal response plan has been in operation for nearly two days.

Alberta SPCA peace officers are part of the official team helping with the animal rescue response in Fort McMurray. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which is managing the response in the affected areas, sent us a request for assistance on May 5.

Our peace officers loaded their trucks with food for dogs, cats, horses and other animals, as well as scores of water bowls and other supplies before they headed north. Thank you to the Edmonton Humane Society and to Hi-Pro Feeds for helping us collect these resources.

We welcome all donations to support the Alberta SPCA's efforts to help the animals in Fort McMurray and their owners.

At this time, we don’t know how many animals will need to be brought south and how much help will be needed in the Edmonton area. Anyone wishing to volunteer for or donate supplies to that effort should contact the Edmonton Humane Society.

We are also gathering information about what animal supplies are required by the evacuation centres. We will work with our partners to see that these items are delivered where they are needed.

We know a lot of people are trying to head north to help, but only those groups and individuals specifically requested by the municipality will have clearance to pass the RCMP checkpoints. No-one else should try to go in.
