20 April 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper pledged to beef up both the RCMP by 1,000 positions and to work with the provinces and municipalities to put at least 2,500 more police officers on the job.

The Prime Minister reiterated his government’s plans to end conditional sentences for those convicted of a violent, sexual or major drug offences and will implement effective gun control by targeting illegal guns used by criminals.

This includes:

  • redirecting the money from the long-gun registry in order to put more front-line officers on the streets of our communities and crack down on the flow of illegal guns across our border.

  • prohibiting conditional sentences for sex offences committed against children.

  • preventing the sexual exploitation of young people by adults be raising the age of consent from 14 to 16.

  • introducing mandatory minimum prison sentences for serious drug offenders like those who deal crystal meth or who operate marijuana grow-ops.

Canadian families, regardless of where they live – shouldn’t be afraid to walk the streets of their communities.  “We will crack down on crime, put the rights of the victims and their families before the criminals who have harmed them, and foster safer more secure communities across the country,” the Prime Minister told the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce in Winnipeg.
