Global Partnership Program Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction Seeking Canadian Collaborators

Former weapons scientists in Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Russia, and Tajikistan are seeking Canadian scientists to collaborate with them on research in nuclear safety, biotechnology and life sciences, energy, environment, space technology, chemistry, physics, communications, materials, and instrumentation. The International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) coordinates project funding with the objective of integrating former Soviet Union (FSU) weapons scientists into the international scientific community. Canada will contribute up to $18 million annually to fund FSU scientists through the ISTC. Although Canada is not presently funding Canadian scientists directly through this program, NSERC will ensure the peer review of proposals. This is an opportunity for Canadian scientists to work with highly accomplished FSU scientists and to potentially access and use the technology created in the process, thereby extending their own R&D budgets.
