MPG (1 MB)
Real Media (221 KB)

 Launch

Date:

June 5, 2002

Location:

Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Flight:

UF-2 (STS-111)

Vehicle:

Space Shuttle Endeavour

 Description

Designation:

Mobile Base System (MBS)

Rationale:

Enables Canadarm2 to move about the main truss of the ISS. Second part of Canada's contribution, the Mobile Servicing System (MSS).

 Details

The MBS provides a moveable work platform and storage facility for astronauts during space walks. Since the MBS has four grapple fixtures, it can serve as a base for both Canadarm2 and the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator simultaneously. Since it will be mounted on an American provided Mobile Transporter (MT), the MBS can move key elements to their required worksite by sliding along a track system mounted along the entire width of the Station.
