Prime Minister Stephen Harper meets with Jennifer Heil, winner of Canada’s first gold medal at the Turin Olympic Winter Games.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the occasion of the opening of the XXth Olympic Winter Games:

"On behalf of all Canadians, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Canadian athletes and their coaches the very best during their upcoming competitions. Canadians recognize and admire the years of effort and dedication you have put into preparing for these Games and we salute you.

Canadians share a strong passion for sport. From the playground to the podium, the values we learn from sport – teamwork, discipline and confidence – are values that make a society and a country stronger.

The Government of Canada is a proud partner in supporting excellence in sport and on behalf of all Canadians, we want you to know we are watching with great pride and excitement as the Games unfold."
