Way Cool! - Day 4

Today's activities:

Individual or Group Activity: Hot Stuff! Making a voltaic cell

Materials

You will need:

Pennies
Aluminium foil
Paper towel
Scissors
250 ml (1 cup) water with 10 teaspoons of salt added
Two pieces of insulated copper wire
Tape

Procedure

  1. Use a penny to draw circles on a sheet of aluminium foil and a piece of paper towel. Cut out all the circles and moisten the paper towel circles with salt water.
  2. Pile up the circles in the following order: copper wire, paper towel, and aluminium foil. Each group of three circles constitutes a cell.
  3. Strip down both ends of the pieces of wire. Tape one end of each wire to each end of a cell. Place the two free ends in contact, preferably in a dark room and watch the sparks fly.
