Mekong from Space: An image is worth a thousand studies

For satellite image enthusiasts, the interactive Mekong from Space website is not to be missed! Stunning imagery in the "Image of the Month" and "Did You Know?" sections provide a new twist on the old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.

The wealth of data on environmental issues in these images contributes to the management of precious water resources in one of the longest river basins in the world.

Canada made a significant contribution in developing the interactive site for the international water management organization, the Mekong River Commission .

Explore the region through the eyes of a satellite sensor! Visit the site and learn about the benefits of satellite data for natural resource management. The power and potential for satellite imagery for continuous monitoring of the environment is evident throughout the site. The information is used to aid sustainable development in fisheries, agriculture, irrigation, forestry, hydropower, and navigation.

Dr Olivier Cogels, Chief Executive Officer of the Mekong River Commission Secretariat said recently that this exciting site was well received by users. “The MRC is very keen to promote any kind of educational resources and to help those in our member countries and others around the world learn more about the region,” he said. “We are also fully aware of the vital role satellite imagery can play in our work in such areas as flood mitigation and management, or environmental monitoring. We are monitoring the 2006 flood season with the assistance of the Canadian Space Agency and are confident this will improve our flood forecasting as we implement better early warning systems in the basin and save more lives.”

Canadian partners

Canadian companies Hatfield Consultants Ltd., Ærde, and Strata360 developed the Mekong from Space educational tool with assistance from the Canadian Space Agency and the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing. There are four East Asian member nations in the Mekong River Commission: Cambodia, Thailand, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), and Vietnam. The Commission has partnership agreements with the two other countries through which the rich, diverse river basin extends: China and Myanmar.
