Safety Performance IndicatorsEvaluating Company Safety ProgramsIn the spring of 2001, the National Energy Board (the NEB) launched the Safety Performance Indicators (SPI) initiative following consultation with industry. The primary objective of the initiative was to evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs among companies regulated by the NEB. Today, the focus is on the evaluation of the effectiveness of both safety and protection of the environment programs. Safety Performance Indicators have been created by combining the mandatory information companies submit to the Board pursuant to the reporting requirements of the Onshore Pipeline Regulations, 1999 with voluntary information submitted annually, such as the number of occupational injuries to contractor and company employees, the number of hours worked as well as leaks and spills volumes. The SPI results are published on a calendar year basis and permit bench-marking and trend analysis over time, and allow the NEB to compare how NEB-regulated companies are doing in comparison to international companies. The report reflects NEB-regulated companies as a group and not as individual companies.
