Mission Statement

Executive & Intergovernmental Affairs provides advice and administrative support to Cabinet and the Government of Nunavut. We work to ensure that the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and Nunavut's relationships with other governments in Canada and the circumpolar world are used to support common goals. We compile and communicate information for today and the future. We evaluate government programs and data.

Our Vision

For government to serve the citizens of Nunavut well, Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs must be a source of solid advice, reliable leadership, effective communication, dependable data, and sound management support.

The Department of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs includes:

Directorate

The Department of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs oversees the overall coordination and management of the executive branch of government, and development of the senior public service. We also provide advice and administrative support to Cabinet and coordinate direction for the Government of Nunavut.

Our department has the responsibility to coordinate, communicate, and monitor the government priorities to ensure that they are managed, understood and remain the focus of activity throughout government and over time.

We work to ensure that the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement is honoured and that Nunavut's relationships with other governments in Canada and the circumpolar world advance Nunavut's goals.

We compile and communicate information and statistics; we evaluate government activity; and we support individual and community access to information and government institutions, ensuring that the public are appropriately informed of government activity.

Communications

As a centralized function, the Communications Division provides support to government departments in the development of communications products and services.

By offering advice, direction, and assistance in planning and co-ordination, the Communications Division aids the departments in developing strategies for public relations, media relations, and internal communications.

The Communications Division is committed to supporting interaction between the Government of Nunavut, organizations, and Nunavummuit by establishing and maintaining active links that foster two-way communication and easy access to programs and services.

The Communications Division is also responsible for promoting the profile of the Government of Nunavut on a national and international level.

Intergovernmental Affairs

Nunavut deals with all the other provinces and territories of Canada, as well as the federal government, to access many national programs. Intergovernmental Affairs co-ordinates the working relationship with other levels of government in Canada. This includes preparations for federal/provincial/territorial working groups, participation in national and regional Premier's meetings and ensuring that Nunavut is well represented and understood throughout the rest of Canada.

Other important areas of responsibility for Intergovernmental Affairs are monitoring the implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement by the Government of Nunavut, as well as our relations with other circumpolar jurisdictions.

Evaluation and Statistics

The Audit, Evaluation and Statistics Division provides Nunavut with specific data and analysis to support better government decision-making, planning, and implementation. This means:

Evaluation:

  • Providing training for departments to perform program evaluations
  • Providing timely, relevant and evidence-based information on the performance of government priority areas in policies, programs and operations, including the results they achieve
Statistics:
  • Providing reliable, accessible and meaningful statistics for Nunavummiut
  • Developing and providing accurate and independent data and analysis to government and Nunavummiut
  • Ensuring a coordinated effort is taken on Audit, Evaluation and Statistics initiatives. Reporting on findings to Nunavummiut in a transparent manner
