JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) Program consists of twenty four (24) strategically placed stations each equipped with a 6 to 7 metre fast rescue craft capable of operating at speeds in excess of 24 knots. The IRBs respond to distress situations twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, in all types of weather and sea conditions. The IRBs employ a complement of one coxswain in charge and two crew members. Crew member's duties include:

  • Crew a rescue craft assigned primary search and rescue duties on Canada's coastal and inland, navigable water;
  • Provide pre-hospital emergency care, at the standard first-aid level, to the sick and injured;
  • Handle mooring and towing lines;
  • Assist the coxswain using electronic navigation;
  • Follow safety procedures and standing orders. Crew members are responsible for their own safety and the safety of the entire crew;
  • Conduct daily inspections and routine maintenance of the rescue boat, specialized rescue, first-aid as well as medical equipment, and the base of operations;
  • Maintain proper deportment to project a positive image of the Canadian Coast Guard;
  • Provide boating safety awareness training and demonstrations to the recreational boating public.

This job requires considerable physical and mental effort, working in close quarters with others in isolated locations under stressful situations. The crew members must be able to work well in a team, be dependable, and able to perform under stress.

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT: Up to 4 months, from mid-May to September

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Fluency in English for Pacific, Central, Arctic, Maritimes and Newfoundland and Labrador Regions.
  2. Fluency in French for Quebec Region.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA (Refer to the Basic Job Requirements below)

The Canadian Coast Guard operates IRB Stations in five (5) regions in Canada.

  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, P.E.I.)
  • Quebec;
  • Central Canada (Great Lakes area); and
  • Pacific.

BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Students who wish to apply as “crew” for the IRB Program must meet the following criteria:

  • be a full-time post-secondary school student;
  • hold a valid driver's license (automobile);
  • hold a valid standard first-aid certificate;
  • hold a valid CPR LEVEL C course certificate (eight hours);
  • hold a pleasure craft operator card; and
  • hold a VHF restricted radio operator's certificate (Maritime).
  • provide a navigation certificate at the latest, by the start of IRB training (for Quebec only).

Note: Please note that persons to be assessed must be fluent in French to work in the Quebec region and fluent in English to work in all other regions .

CERTIFICATES:

Preference may be given to persons to be assessed who:

  • hold a valid Bronze Cross in swimming (mandatory for Newfoundland and Labrador); and
  • have a certificate from a boating course covering such subjects as chart work, coastal navigation, basic seamanship etc. (mandatory for Quebec).

NOTE: These requirements vary from one region to another.

Coxswain (IRB crew supervisor) positions:

To apply for re-employment as a coxswain, you must have a minimum of one work term of previous IRB crew experience.

Quebec Region:
For re-employment as a coxswain in Quebec, preference MAY be given to persons to be assessed with two (2) work terms of IRB crew experience in Quebec .

INFORMATION TO BE PROVIDED:

If requested, you must be able to provide the following information or your application will be rejected:

  • Proof of post secondary school registration for the next semester; and
  • Documentation to support that you meet the criteria listed above (1 to 6).

Note: Please note that persons to be assessed must be able to provide their certificate from a boating course no later than the commencement of IRB training.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. At least 60 hours of paid training will be provided before crew members are placed at a station.
  2. Persons to be assessed may be responsible for their own accommodations during training.
  3. Hours of work vary according to region, but are generally 12 hour days, on a 7 or 14 days of work and 7 or 14 days off basis, depending on the region.

    Note : Hours of work, training, and accommodations will be confirmed by regional Coast Guard IRB coordinators during interview process.
