The RCMP, as the provincial police force, and other local police forces in the province, respond to requests for ground search and rescue in Alberta. Volunteers work under the direction of the police service responsible for a search, or with the local Disaster and Emergency Programs Branch Director. If necessary, the Branch acts as a liaison between the lead agency and any other organizations involved. The Branch can also obtain necessary provincial or municipal resources to support SAR activities.
