Canada's Place in the World

Canada’s place in the world has changed over the course of the past decade. The United States remains the world’s pre-eminent super power, but a more global economy is rapidly developing with the expansion of the European Union and with emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil assuming increasingly important roles in trade and foreign policy.

Though the global economy is strong, many of the world’s six billion people are not benefiting and reducing poverty has become a cornerstone of the global development agenda.

In addition, since the events of September 11, 2001, the world’s attention has been focused on the threat posed by terrorism. Every terrorist attack – Bali, Istanbul, Madrid and London, among others – reminds us that the international campaign against terrorism is not over.
