Elections Canada—Administering the Federal Electoral Process

Electoral process is well managed

Chapter 6, November 2005 Report of the Auditor General

Ottawa, 22 November 2005—Elections Canada is doing a good job of making sure that it is always ready for a federal election call and that eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots, says the Auditor General of Canada, Sheila Fraser, in her Report tabled today in the House of Commons. Direct costs of the 2004 general election were about $212 million.

"I am pleased to report that Elections Canada plans, manages, and administers the federal electoral process well," said Ms. Fraser.

The audit found that through good planning systems and practices, Elections Canada stays prepared for an election that could be called at any time. It also provides considerable support to returning officers and their staff in delivering elections.

The Report notes that there are some opportunities for Elections Canada to improve its efficiency. It could also improve the quality of its performance measures, particularly for its communication and public education programs, and it could give Parliament clearer reports on the success of its efforts.
