Foothills SAR's mission is to develop and maintain a community resource trained to provide expertise and education in the areas of search and rescue within southern Alberta. FSAR is trained for urban, rural and wilderness searching, with many members having specialized training in navigation, swiftwater rescue, rope rescue, civil emergency response, ATVs, avalanche rescue, advanced medical, radio communications, and evidence handling. All members are trained in search fundamentals and first aid. FSAR teaches Lost in the Woods and Hug-a-tree programmes. Founded in 1993, FSAR has about 60 volunteer members.
