Typical Features of an International Environmental
Agreement
International environmental agreements typically have the following main components:

An introductory preamble and, in some cases, a statement of guiding principles

A statement of objectives of the agreement

Substantive commitments by the parties

Provision for establishing a secretariat or similar organizational body with administrative
and co-ordinating functions

A requirement for the parties to report on their efforts to implement and comply with
agreement obligations

Provisions for monitoring, reviewing and amending the agreement
-
Dispute settlement provisions
-
Provisions for regular meetings of the parties to develop and approve work programs, to
discuss implementation issues, and to update the agreement through Protocols or
Annexes
