![]() Lloyd Gallagher1999 Outstanding SAR Achievement Award WinnerOn behalf of the Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence and Lead Minister for Search and Rescue (SAR), and the National Search and Rescue Secretariat (NSS), R. William Slaughter, Executive Director of the NSS, presented the Secretariat's 1999 Outstanding Search and Rescue Achievement Award to Lloyd Gallagher, former Manager of the Kananaskis, Alberta, Public Safety Program at the Awards Banquet of the Canadian search and rescue workshop, SARSCENE '99, in St. John's, Newfoundland on 16 October 1999. "Canada's geography creates many challenges for searchers but the skills and courage of our SAR community has made our system a model for other countries around the world," said Mr. Eggleton. "Lloyd Gallagher exemplifies the dedication and expertise shared by Canadian SAR providers from across the country." From physically climbing to the rescue of a fallen climber, to working
to develop inter-agency programs, Mr. Gallagher has significantly improved
SAR in the Kananaskis Region of Alberta and has been a true leader in
mountain rescue. He is an accomplished mountain climber, and earned renown
in 1982 as the deputy leader of the first Canadian expedition to climb
Mount Everest. He has also scaled Canada's highest peak, Mount Logan in
the Yukon. Mr. Gallagher, a resident of Canmore, Alberta, now works in
the private sector helping companies develop staff training programs in
rope rescue and helicopter rescue systems.
