My responsibilities

Upon receipt of a new travel document

  1. Verify the accuracy of the information in the passport, especially your personal information. If there are any errors, contact Passport Canada immediately.
  2. Sign your name on page 3 in the space provided. Children 11 years of age or over must sign their own travel documents.
  3. Address - Complete the section provided on page 4.
  4. Contact information - Enter on page 4 the name of a person to be contacted in case of emergency and keep it up to date. We recommend that you name someone who would not normally travel with you.

Keeping the travel document up to date

Change of address

If your address or the address of the person to contact in case of emergency changes, make sure to update the information on page 4.

Change of appearance

As the intent of the travel document photo is to identify the person presenting his or her travel document to border officials, it is essential that the photo accurately reflect the identity of the bearer. In order for you to avoid experiencing difficulties when travelling, we normally suggest that you obtain a new travel document if your appearance has changed significantly.

New - Obligation to return the travel document

If you are issued a Canadian travel document or a Certificate of Identity and later obtain a national passport or travel document of your country of origin, you must return the Canadian travel document to Passport Canada.

While away... Keep the travel document safe

Family at airport

The travel document is a valuable document. Protect it at all times. Do not leave it unattended in your baggage, automobile, hotel room or elsewhere. Keep it with you at all times, such as in your inside coat pocket, purse, or money belt.

  • Carry your travel document with you in a money belt or lock it in your hotel safe.
  • In some countries, you may have to surrender your passport to a foreign government official or a hotel/hostel employee. If you don't get it back in a reasonable time, inform the nearest Canadian Government office abroad.
