The Pest Management Information Service is a federal government initiative to provide information on pesticide regulation and registered pesticides. The service has been available to Canadians since its launch in 1984, and operates under the auspices of Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA). The PMRA regulates the import into, sale and use of pesticides in Canada, at the federal level.

A team of Information Officers is available to respond to inquiries about the federal pesticide registration process in Canada, federal regulations, Canada’s initiatives in the area of pesticides, and pesticide labelling and safety precautions. The officers respond to inquiries from all sectors of Canadian society including individuals, growers, all levels of government, the pesticide industry and the media.

The Information Service has a number of information brochures to help you with controlling common household pests, lawn care, swimming pool and spa maintenance and personal insect repellents. The measures detailed in these publications not only suggest chemical means of control but also propose alternatives to pesticides, such as biological or physical control methods.

Growers, pesticide vendors and professional applicators and companies are licensed by provincial governments. For provincial regulations regarding pesticide use, consult the local office of your provincial environment department.*

For agricultural advice specific to your locality, consult the local office of your provincial agriculture department.*

For information on the disposal of unused, unwanted product and the cleanup of spills, contact the provincial regulatory agency or the manufacturer.*

* Government telephone numbers are listed in the blue page section of your local telephone directory.
