Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs)

Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

Last Verified: 2006-06-19

Atlantic Canada's 41 CBDCs are a strategic and effective community-based development infrastructure. The programs and services they deliver are aimed at helping entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada get the information, advice, and capital they need to make their businesses succeed.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria may vary from office to office. To obtain further information, contact one of the CBDCs directly.

Summary

What are CBDCs?

In its efforts to create jobs and help build a sustainable Atlantic economy, ACOA constantly strives to improve access to federal government programming for Atlantic entrepreneurs. ACOA has linked its resources, both financial and technical, to those of the 41 Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs) located throughout rural Atlantic Canada.

This strategic alliance of resources has helped to establish an effective community-based development infrastructure in Atlantic Canada while reducing the overlap and duplication of federal services and helping entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada to get the information, advice, and capital they need to make their businesses succeed.

The CBDCs are autonomous, not-for-profit* corporations servicing the rural regions of Atlantic Canada supported by ACOA. They assist in the creation of small businesses and in the expansion, modernization and stabilization of existing businesses. They offer both technical and financial services for entrepreneurs in their respective regions.

Types of Assistance

Technical assistance usually takes the form of information, counselling and advice on small business related matters. Financial assistance is usually in the form of a loan but may include equity or loan guarantees. These financial services are targeted to entrepreneurs who have difficulty securing capital through traditional sources of funding. They do not compete with financial institutions.

Terms

All the loans are repayable. For qualifying clients, the maximum loan amount is $150 000. Investment decisions are made by an independent local board of directors sensitive to the needs of community.

Some related provincial and/or federal government programs are delivered or facilitated through the CBDCs. This will vary from office to office.

For more information, you may visit the Web site or contact the CBDC toll-free at 1-888-303-2232.

*Note: "non-profit" also known as nonprofit organizations, non profit organizations, not-for-profit organizations, voluntary organizations and volunteer organizations.
