NOTES TO THE IMPORTER :
Saskatchewan Finance (#1) and Customs & Border Services (#4) must be contacted for any person involved in commercial transactions.
Competition Bureau (#5) is contacted if the imported product is in a packaged form. It must meet the criteria outlined in the Packaging and Labelling Act. If the imported product is not in a packaged state, there must be a tag on the product identifying the country of origin. If one is lacking, Canada Border Services Agency's Customs Office will stop and hold the shipment from coming into Canada.
Health Canada, Product Safety Bureau (#6) is concerned with imported products that meet the regulations of the Hazardous Product Act. Products under this Act are toys, children's products, household chemicals and other numerous products. For verification of whether or not the imported product is under the jurisdiction of this Act, the individual should contact the Regional Product Safety Office of Health Canada for additional information.
Canada Revenue Agency, Goods and Services Tax (#7) will be contacted by all individuals importing goods. The GST is imposed on the selling price for duty-paid value of imported goods. Businesses with an annual sales volume of taxable goods below $30,000 are not required to be registered and do not have to charge the Goods and Services Tax.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (#8) will provide the individual with an Importer's Permit application form. This permit is required specifically for imported clothes. Generally the permit is not needed for other goods, but verification should be made.
Canada Border Services Agency launched a Web site in April, 2003 that is tailored to meet the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. This site provides useful tools and resources such as a step-by-step guide to importing, upcoming seminars and an electronic newsletter. Visit the CBSA Web site
