Magazines and Trade Journals

Last Verified: 2006-01-10

Trade periodicals offer invaluable information. They help keep you in touch with trends and developments in the industry. They provide information on new products and services (either by specific article or advertising). They often carry profiles on successful people in the business - or interesting techniques, customer service, solutions to common problems, etc.

Many trade journals publish an annual "buyer's guide" or "who's who" of the industry. These special issues list suppliers of materials, products, and services required by the industry. There are thousands of such magazines published in North America.

To find listings of trade journals and magazines, check your public library for directories such as the ones listed below.

1. Standard Periodical Index
2. National Directory of Magazines
3. The Serials Directory

There are other directories that list magazines and trade journals by subject. For example, a directory of associations may have an index of serials, newsletters and directories and which association publishes them.

Once you have the periodicals that interest you, check the library to see if they are available. But don't be surprised to discover that the library does not subscribe to that particular publication. There are too many special interest titles to be carried by libraries. Keep in mind that there are specialty libraries established in a variety of places. Associations, Chambers of Commerce, etc. and public access to these libraries is often permitted (usually by appointment).

If you decide to call the publisher of a particular title - ask a few questions about whether or not they publish specialty issues such as a buyer's guide or a who's who issue. If they do, you may choose to purchase that particular back issue. Other questions to ask might include their target market. Is the periodical designed for business, consumer or members of an association?
