Summary

Following is a list of Web sites, databases, organizations and books that are a good source of information when researching demographic and statistical data.

Demographics refers to the characteristics of population segments. In business, its focus is fixed on the study of consumer markets.

  • Industry/Trade Figures for your kind of business

Small Business Profiles (also known as Performance Plus ), Industry Canada. This is an on-line benchmarking tool. It provides detailed financial and employment data on more than 600 business sectors across Canada including more than 30 performance benchmarks to help small businesses determine how they measure up against their competitors. This tool uses the Small Business Profiles created from a sample of Revenue Canada tax returns for both incorporated and unincorporated businesses operating in Canada. It gives instant access to benchmark financial data that help small businesses construct a business plan. NAICS codes are used to classify industries and are available on Statistics Canada's web site  North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 1997 - Canada .

The Risk Management Association's (RMA's) Annual Statement Studies U. S. data/U.S. SIC codes. The Statement Studies contains composite financial data. Financial statements on each industry are shown in common size, and are accompanied by widely used ratios. Balance sheets and income statements are shown in common size, with each item a percentage of total assets and sales (or revenues), respectively.

Financial Performance Indicators
Determine the relative profitability of a particular industry in Canada or Saskatchewan and to compare financial ratios and balance sheets of a particular company with the industry average.

Associations Canada Directory - Trade Associations are another source of statistical information.

  • Expenditure Information

PCensus Determine target markets, evaluate market potential, etc. through the analysis of Canadian population and consumer spending statistics, including some estimates and projections.   Includes: Consumer Spending - General, this database has 16 categories at a summarized level that in turn contain over 800 detailed spending items: for example: draperies, freezers, childcare, bookcases, plumbing maintenance, campgrounds, jeans, taxis, make-up and health insurance.  Consumer Spending - Food, this database gives a highly detailed breakdown of total expenditures and average household expenditure on over 300 food items including restaurants and specialty stores.

  • Lists of Suppliers, Wholesalers, Distributors, etc.

Canadian Business Disc Brief information on approximately two million Canadian businesses (includes institutions such as churches, hospitals, libraries, colleges and schools).  For each company the information provided is: company name, address, telephone, type of business, company size (by number of employees and sales volume), and key contact individual.   Restrictions: Our contract with the producers of this product, Canadian Business Information, limits our users to printing a maximum of 50 records. If you require in excess of 50 records, contact the company at 1-800-565-7224 in regard to the purchase of mailing lists.

Scott's Online - Scott’s National Industrial Selectory Primarily used to locate sources for products - manufacturers, wholesalers of distributors.  Can also be used to identify sales prospects.  Restrictions: Our contract with the producers of this product limits our users to printing a maximum of 30 records.

Canadian Trade Index Primarily used to locate sources for products - manufacturers or distributors.  Used also to identify exporters by product and by regions to which they export.  In our library Trade Export .047S .

  • General

Saskatchewan Business-To-Business Sales & Marketing Directory (book in our library) This directory is a comprehensive list of businesses in Saskatchewan categorized by city, industry heading, major employers, and manufacturers by city and SIC Code.  It's an ideal source for sales leads, credit decisions, telemarketing, direct mail, market research, or as a general reference. (For Reference Only)

Statistics Canada  
Community Profiles contain free information about all Canadian communities (cities, towns, villages, Indian reserves and Indian settlements, etc.). Statistics include: population; education; earnings; income families and dwellings; religion; births and deaths.

FP Markets: Canadian Demographics Easy to use reference guide on Canada's cities and towns, census divisions and provinces. Statistics include: populations by age and sex, housing types, marital status, private households, families, income, occupations, labour force, home language and schooling. There are also projections for 2004 and 2007 of many census variables.  (In our library For Reference Only)

Saskatchewan Government Bureau of Statistics -  Includes the consumer price index.

Bi-Annual Population Estimate
The Planning and Building Department uses neighbourhoods to describe Saskatoon communities. The main sources of data are Statistics Canada and the City of Saskatoon, with other data obtained from secondary sources, such as the two Saskatoon Boards of Education and the University of Saskatchewan.

City of Regina Neighbourhood Profiles
This neighborhood profile is intented to present basic characteristics on population, housing and public facilities.

Sask Trends Monitor - The monthly newsletter tracks economic, social, and demographic trends from a Saskatchewan perspective.

Community Profile: Saskatoon -  Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority Inc. . A listing of economic and demographic facts and figures in Saskatoon.

Real Estate Market Information -  Brundson, Martin Appraisals  This site provides access to studies that give a general overview of the local economic conditions including the office, retail, industrial, apartment and residential sectors of the Saskatoon market as well as additional in-depth studies for certain core areas of Saskatoon. It also provides some market/economic information for other key areas of Saskatchewan.

Labour Market Information - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)
The Labour Market Information service provides general and detailed information on local labour markets across Canada. This information can help people search for work, and to make general employment, training and career decisions. This site provides accurate occupational, community, and industry information.

Industry profiles: Research and Statistics - Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)
Industry Profiles are overviews of many industries within the Canadian economy, with a special focus on human resources issues. The profiles examine how the changing economic environment, and general trends in research & development and technology, affect the labour force employed in an industry.

Job Futures - Outlooks By Occupation - Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSD). Covers 211 occupational groups; includes labour market characteristics, types of employers, and forecasts to 2004.

Canada at a glance presents the current Canadian demographic, education, health, justice, housing, income, labour market, economic, travel, financial, and foreign trade statistics in a free 24 page booklet. This booklet also includes important international comparisons, so that readers can see how Canada stacks up against its neighbours. Updated twice yearly, Canada at a glance is a very useful reference for those who want quick access to current Canadian statistics.

Canadian Economy Online -   This is a one-stop guide to the national economy which lets you check out statistics, access a wealth of federal government information and learn more about economic concepts and events.

  • Aboriginal Information

First Nation Profiles  -  The site extracts information from a number of databases at the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. Profiles include information of general interest about the First Nation, the First Nation's government, Tribal Councils and reserves.

Registered Indian Population by Sex and Residence - 2002 
This 85 page revised publication describes the Indian Registry System (IRS) population as recorded at December 31, 2002. Descriptive statistics are developed from the IRS that include sex, age, residence, registry group, responsibility centre and region. Data are organized in two broad sections. The first section provides summary statistics that includes age and gender distribution and residency comparisons for all regions and Canada. The second section presents detailed information for each registry group arranged by sex, residence, responsibility centre and region. Available in English and French.

  • Agricultural Information

Benchmark for Success : Learning from Industry to Plan your Future This 6 page brochure explains the importance of comparing the performance of a farm to others of the same size and kind in order so that a farmer can identify his farm's strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for the future. It contains the address of the Benchmarking website. 

  • Self Employment, Bankruptcies and Other Small Business Statistics

Strategis -  Small Business Quarterly  A quarterly Industry Canada publication that provides an overview of key small business statistics, trends and recent developments.

Strategis -  Key Small Business Statistics Key statistics on small business topics, responding to some of the most commonly asked questions.
