THE TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD OF CANADA DEPLOYS TO THE SITE OF A FERRY SINKING NEAR PRINCE RUPERT, BRITISH COLUMBIA

(Gatineau, Quebec, March 22, 2006) - The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying an investigation team to the site of the passenger ferry Queen of the North sinking that occurred near Prince Rupert, British Columbia last night.

Under the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act, the TSB has the exclusive jurisdiction to investigate this occurrence in order to make findings as to its causes and contributing factors.

The TSB is an independent agency operating under its own Act of Parliament. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
